Michelle Obama isn’t holding much back about her past in her new memoir.
The former First Lady and lawyer wrote candidly about her formative years in “Becoming,” Obama’s upcoming book chronicling the events that have shaped her from childhood to the White House.
She even opened up about her teenage years of smoking weed with her ex.
“We went on real dates, going for what we considered upscale dinners at Red Lobster and to the movies,” Michelle wrote of her now ex-boyfriend, David. “We fooled around and smoked pot in his car.”
She also recalls a “looser, more wild” Barack Obama in his younger days, who “smoked pot in the lush volcanic foothills of Oahu,” she wrote.
Obama talked about her hazy past in a recent interview with 20/20’s Robin Roberts, who was impressed by such honesty.
In a shocked reaction to the admission, Roberts asked Obama, “You could’ve left that out, so why did you talk about that?”
“That’s what I did,” Obama said. “That’s part of the ‘Becoming’ story. Everybody had something that they had to work through, something that they were figuring out.”
She also felt an obligation to be honest to the youth, who now live in a nation where some form of cannabis is legal in 33 states and counting.
Obama asked Roberts, “Why would I hide that from the next generation?”[embedded content]
